![]() ![]() To better accommodate all modes, some agencies have operated the PHB in synchronization with adjacent traffic signals during peak traffic conditions, while providing hot-button operation during off-peak periods and weekends.īikeHAWKS are a variation of a standard pedestrian hybrid beacon that provide defined space for bicyclists in the crossing, waiting areas, and on the approach to and departure from the crossing using pavement markings and potentially other treatments such as flexible delineator posts or curb. These are placed in convenient locations for all users, and abide by ADA standards. To improve pedestrian compliance, pedestrian-activated hybrid beacons should normally have “hot” pushbutton actuators (respond immediately when pressed). Refer to guidance on crossing enhancements at uncontrolled locations. The MUTCD recommends minimum volumes of 20 pedestrians or bicyclists per hour for major arterial crossings (volumes exceeding 2,000 vehicles/hour). Pedestrian hybrid beacons may be used at locations that do not meet traffic signal warrants but where assistance is needed for pedestrians to cross.
